I’m sitting beside the waterfall at Monocacy Par

I’m sitting beside the waterfall at Monocacy Park, a place where I spent many happy days in my youth, formative years, now reflecting on Dickey Betts’ passing. His music and influence accompanied all my formative listening and was inextricably intertwined with all my early experiences, musical, social, and in solitude.

The realization of how constant a companion his brilliance was didn’t hit me until now, but his guitar was a comfort and an inspiration, a door to the world and protection from it, a model and a mark so impossibly high I could only hope to aim for it.

Unfailingly melodic, fiery, creative, confident, straightforward, and economical, in both his writing and improvisation, peerless, there was nothing and no one else who even got close to his connection between his art and my soul. I’m confident I’m not alone in that feeling.

The Allman Brothers Band played just a few miles from here at Lehigh University when I was just a teen.
I was fortunate to attend.
When the band began to play I experienced something profound; the entire stage seemed to lift and spin, ebb and flow, pulse, as if animated by some spirit beyond my comprehension.
It was life itself, the animating spirit I felt.

Life is the spirit that animates the body, and the mystery of how spirit inhabits the mortal body for a time and ultimately passes for us all, only to rejoin the universe in immortality is where my heart and soul linger today by this waterfall.

We’ve all been blessed to share our world with Dickey Betts.
I’m sorry for his passing for all his family and friends, but there are no words I can offer to fully express the loss.

Only to say the spirit that animates the music, that animates our bodies, and once animated his, is one and the same, and lives on forever.
